I have recently completed reading the naval historical novels by Patrick O’Brian, following the exploits of a certain Jack Aubrey and his rise through the ranks of the British Royal Navy sailing square rigged ships during the times of Nelson.
There are 20 books in the series, all of which which are unbelievably detailed in their depiction of life in the Royal Navy as well as being technically accurate regarding the actual sailing of the ships themselves.
If you are considering reading these books, then you might find them hard going initially, but persevere and you will be well rewarded.
The books inspired the movie ‘Master and Commander - The Far Side of the World’ starring Russell Crowe.
